Skip to 36.40 for the start of the ceremony

So, we're just over 2 months in to married life and it is great; its so much fun to be building family together. We're learning a lot and enjoying each other's company. Of course, there are the usual ups and downs of personalities & expectations and the rest of life (sooooo much paperwork) but all four of us are experiencing so many of the Lord's blessings through one another.

I'll write more generally about life soon but today I'm going to respond to the many people who have asked for copies of the vows that we made at the wed...

Follow Up

As you may have seen on social media, James and I kicked off the trip with a journey to Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao, where WildFire Philippines has been working the past four summers.

We spent most of our time catching up with the two parts of the Higa-onon tribe (which we are part of - see the wrap up of the summer to find out how). The community in which we spent a large amount of our time, installing the sanitation system and clean water pump is doing very well indeed. The community toilets, shower room & water pump are getting a lot of use and are still in perfe...

Advent - it's a preparation, an interruption. Problem is, the interruption has been interrupted - interrupted by more of the same, only inflated, over done, all out. More of the same busyness and buying - more of the same emptiness. More of the same people to see, things to do, more of the same loneliness.

Advent - it's a preparation, an interruption. Problem is, we're preparing for the wrong thing. Preparing for the office party, the stuffing, the turkey and the inevitable January diet. Preparing the presents, the table, the carol service and for the day the decoratio...

It's been a good while since my last 'life-update' & more has changed in the last 6 months than perhaps ever has in such a short period...

We're getting married!

As you may well have seen on social media or the like, I got engaged. Many of you who have followed my work & adventures over the years but don't live in or around Stafford, UK may well have not met Freya and are wondering 'who the heck is this colourful, crazy & extremely beautiful woman in Jake's life?'. In answer to that question I thought I'd spend some time filling you in and also introduce you to her kids, R...

Building on the backdrop of 3 summer teams WildFire once more embarked on a summer adventure to Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. The team of 10 ranging in ages from 15 to 30 set off with the following self-penned mottoes...

"Mission statement: We are going to Cagayan de Oro to partner with God & the Filipino community so that healing, practical skills, joy & peace would be released in all spheres of influence. We're doing this because we're called to reveal the hope that Jesus has for all lives."

"Team covenant: dear brothers & sisters, let's seek unity as family with on...

Over the last year a number of people have asked me about the description of myself on the website header. I thought I'd take a little time to explain...

The term jester is perhaps a little misunderstood. It would seem that the word often begets synonyms such as 'fool' or 'buffoon'. These words do describe some types of jesting but these were most certainly not derogatory terms in their correct context; rather they referred to the type of act being displayed by a highly competent & well practiced performer. We could include harlequin, magician, acrobat, juggler & storytel...

Tuesday: Pancakes, pancakes, pancakes - hard to escape & I was not complaining! I love a good pancake, especially when there’s some bacon and maple syrup around!

Wednesday: silence, no mention of Ash Wednesday, lent or fasting. When I brought the subject up I was greeted with one of five typical replies:

“Lent, what’s that?”
“Fasting, oh that old fashioned thing”.
“Oh that’s very legalistic, Jesus is all about freedom”.
“Not eating, that would make me hungry(?)”.
“I’m fasting something that isn’t food” / “I’m taking up something instead of fasting”.

We’ve thrown away...

Those of you who know me well will be aware that my life rarely has a discernible pattern. Flitting between leading outreaches, gigging with Straws, various church services and the odd bit of sessional work is the norm. But even amid the constant change, 2016 promises to be a year that will blow my somewhat scatty rhythm out of the water!

Family & Home

My Dad is getting married - Whoop - big party, drinks all around & a cheese wedding cake(?) - yeah, I’m not sold on that idea either. But hey ho, great news for both him and Linda and the start of a new exciting chapter...

A few weeks ago I visited Cosmo, the international buffet, with my Dad and some of his family. A fairly normal and very nice occurrence on the whole, but it was my waiting in line at the Teppanyaki bar which aroused thought and no little introspection.

Teppanyaki is very popular, which is understandable. Scallops, salmon, squid, beef fillets, king prawn... all lead to a seriously big queue. It's at this point, queuing, listening to the the not only crackling of the east meets west fizzling fusion of flash frying fish but the east meets west fusion of both Punjabi and W...

As many of you know, I've travelled out to the Philippines 7 times now and for a variety of reasons. Typhoon relief and rehab, reconnaissance & planning trips, a Christmas holiday & of course leading WildFire intergenerational mission teams.

Our teams have always been a joy to lead and have always left a lasting impact on the lives of the people we’ve worked alongside, but there was something particularly beautiful about the team which I was part of this year; a beauty that led to the greatest impact we’ve seen so far on a short trip.

WildFire, where possible, alw...
